Update 8/30/2013: Forum Experiment

Posted by BenTibbetts - August 30th, 2013

Hi Newgrounders,

Back in 2006 I set up and operated a small phpBB community oriented towards current events and political discussion. It was fun. It did not require much commitment from anyone (including myself). Eventually it died out, and afterwards I was left with the impression of a good experience.

Today on a whim I decided to re-activate that forum, and re-design it with an aim towards creating a modest outlet for members to showcase their creative work including music, visual art and photography, creative writing, films and games. The idea is to create a small but open space for self-promotion and discussion. If this peaks your interest consider stopping by.

The NG BBS no fun? They got some real blowhards in the Politics forum :| General, is basically what it says... run of the mill discussions, but we got some unique folks here.

I'm only registered to an email and this place... oh, and thanks to the internet, PayPal and Etsy :\ I'd much rather mail a check, dammit.

Good for you; it must be nice being registered to only a few services. It's true that some of the forums here are better than others. And like anywhere else there are certain members that seem to have registered only so they can troll and antagonize other members. But I like the Newgrounds community overall.

Luckily, and despite my occasional hair-brained comments, most NGers leave me be, to make a fool of myself :) But is it out of pity, or respect for my age/ long membership, dunno.

Ticked pink the old classic Portal looks like it did in the early 2000's though! Everything gets voted and passed on in a timely manner! And there's more blams apparently.

You are hard on yourself. :) Yes, it's nice to see the 'purple monster' defeated.

BTW, is that still (picture) from Citizen Kane? Any recitals this weekend?

Yes, that is a picture of Walter Thatcher, furious at a young Charles Foster Kane about an insolent letter. As a matter of fact I did perform this past weekend; I composed music for a service at a small church in New Hampshire. It was a nice experience. The building is in a secluded area very close to the ocean. Here are some pictures of the location: http://ryereflections.org/servlet/pluto?state=3030347061676530303757656250616765303032696430303435303332

Wow man, that place is gorgeous!! Most of my friends growing up, had the dream of playing Black Sabbath tunes on a great church organ... massive acoustics yo :)

That would be fun! The acoustics in churches can be amazing. Do you play keyboard?

Not often or reliably, but I did teach myself a few tunes, like Chopsticks, an early Genesis song... I knew guitar better, but after a year of not having the semester course (which was excellent) in 8th grade, I forgot it all.

Say I noticed you bought the NG writing anthology... any good?

I am reading it right now. It is well worth the money. Most of the pieces are entertaining. A few of them are moving. Parts of it read like they come from an inside joke, which makes it seem intimate and well-tailored towards Newgrounds veterans. Here is a sample from the foreword by EKublai:

"With 'The Newgrounds Writing Anthology', it is my hope and the hope of the other authors involved in this publication for yet another sect of the Newgrounds community to be highlighted and to get their mojo, their portal, and for the creative process at Newgrounds to come full circle. It is the unpretentious creative genius of Newgrounds that stands out for me and is why I'll always have a smile on my face after hearing a good old-fashioned Newgrounds cock joke...Well...Let's be honest here, I'd smile even if there was no joke."

Huh, suppose I'll pick one up when I renew my Supporter Upgrade... I'd consider picking up 2 copies, one for my local library, but, they seem a picky bunch there. My town's turned into an old people's warehouse, for the most part.

That is a generous thought. I suppose you could send the local library an email with a link to the book, asking them if it is something they'd be interested in.
